TOPICAINE® GEL delivers its active principle, Lidocaine, through the skin, deep into the dermis, where it reaches the pain receptors.
This elegant, patented(*) formulation, delivers Lidocaine in its base form (lipophilic) that most readily permeates the skin. Onset of anesthesia is fast since Lidocaine is delivered initially from the continous phase (a water-ethanol-glycerin solvent system) where it is highly soluble.
The safe and effective skin permeation enhancers accelerate this process by temporarily and reversibly inceasing the permeability of the stratum corneum. The lidocaine-loaded microvesicles increase the residence time of lidocaine in the epidermis and dermis, prolonging the duration of anesthesia.
